In a resurfaced clip from September 11, 1984, which has gone viral on TikTok, none of the three contestants got the Final Jeopardy! question correct but all three had wagered all their earnings, so they lost everything.

In Final Jeopardy! the host announces the single category for the round and players have the time over the commercial break to place their final wager as partitions are placed between them.

They then get 30 seconds to write down the question after the host reveals the clue and their responses are revealed from the lowest scoring to the highest.

If they get the answer right their earnings are increased by the amount they wagered. The opposite applies if the person gets it wrong and the amount they wagered is removed from their overall total.

In the beloved host’s second episode at the helm of the quiz show, he asked the players, “calendar date with which the 20th century began?”

“Welcome back, folks. This is the ‘Final Jeopardy!’ before the championship. The wagers have been made in secret. Players, in a moment, I am going to give you the ‘Final Jeopardy!’ answer. You’ll have 30 seconds in which to write down the question. Be sure it is in the form of a question. Here we go! The category is ‘The Calendar,’” Trebek began.

The players revealed they all had the same response which was “What was January 1, 1900?”

However, that response was wrong, leaving the players and even the audience in shock.

But what made the moment even more unbelievable was all three contestants had wagered all their earnings and so were left with $0. That meant there would be no returning champion the following night.

“I’m at a loss for words. But, in a situation like this…” Trebek said in shock as he wiped his brow and whistled.

He added: “Easy come, easy go, but each of our contestants wound up with nothing, but we have consolation prizes for them.”

As he tried to wrap up, an audience member yelled, “What’s the answer?” to a bewildered Trebek, who corrected him by saying “What’s the question?” and told them it was in fact, January 1, 1901.

It was the first time all three contestants were sent packing in the show’s history and has only happened six times since then. The most recent time was in 2016, according to The Jeopardy Fan website.

Trebek began hosting the revived show in 1984 after it first aired on NBC in 1969.

He would go on to host the show for 38 seasons before his death in November 2020 from pancreatic cancer.
