It turns out that the man responsible for Uprising, Smash Bros., and Kirby, Masahiro Sakurai, and the rest of the team at Project Sora simply didn’t have 3DS dev kits when they began development on Kid Icarus. In the most recent Iwata Asks, Sakurai revealed that the team had to make do with developing the title on PC, before shifting development over to the Wii, and then finally porting the game to the 3DS.
It turns out that the lack of initial 3DS dev kits is also the reason why the game took longer than anticipated to release. Nintendo President Satoru Iwata admitted that porting the game over from the PC/Wii to the 3DS “took much longer than what we originally anticipated.”
Along with revealing that the game began on PC, Sakurai also released a couple of videos highlighting the land/air combat prototypes that Project Sora originally put together while developing Kid Icarus: Uprising to show new employees what kind of game they were trying to make. It can be seen below.

Even with the game’s delay, it’s hard to complain about the final product we received. If some people still absolutely refuse to believe that Uprising is awesome, then I recommend checking out Game Rant’s review of Kid Icarus: Uprising. In the meantime, fans should enjoy the latest product to spawn from Sakurai’s think sack, as he now begins development on Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U and 3DS.
