Project Xehanort

The teaser images feature the younger Xehanort playing chess from the cut scenes at the beginning and end of Kingdom Hearts 3. Xehanort is the ultimate bad guy: a time traveling ne’er dowell who has no problem entering the bodies of those he can use as pawns. His end goal is to recreate Kingdom Hearts, a giant heart in the sky that contains ultimate power, by creating the ultimate weapon χ-blade. Though his plans are eventually foiled, it’s still at least somewhat unclear if KH3 is the absolute end of Xehanort’s story.

Kingdom Hearts revels in over-complicated stories and plots that weave on through multiple games. This new mobile title could give us a bit of backstory into Xehanot’s transition from Keyblade master to the personification of darkness itself. Here’s hoping for more Malificient and Pete interactions too, because that duo makes every game better.

Kingdom Hearts Next Title

In an interview with Tetsuya Nomura reflecting on the Re: Mind DLC, the game director mentions there won’t be any more paid DLC for Kingdom Hearts 3, but the “next title” in the franchise is being developed. Two operational teams are currently working on KH projects, including one that will be coming surprisingly soon. Nomura is likely referring to Project Xehanort in this case, since spring 2020 is pretty soon for a franchise that took 15 years to publish a third mainline installment.

The Kingdom Hearts UX team is expecting to release a teaser later today.

Kingdom Hearts 3is available now on PS4 and Xbox One. The Re: Mind DLC is exclusive to PS4 until February 25.
